Host a Dinner, Save the World!Category:
In June of this year, the leaders of the G8 and G20 (the G8 is the Group of 8: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, the US, Russia, and Japan; the Group of 20 is a gathering of finance ministers and central bankers from 20 economies) will be gathering in Huntsville and Toronto, Ontario. The week before the G8 and G20 summits, a group of faith leaders from Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh, Baha’i, Aborginal, and other religious traditions will be meeting in Winnipeg to discuss ways to encourage leaders at the summits to act on the justice issues detailed in the 2010 Interfaith Statement called A Time for Inspired Leadership and Action, which call on the leaders of the G8 and G20 to: 1. Address poverty; This interfaith gathering is being hosted by Archbishop Fred Hiltz, our own Primate! This all sounds great, but what does it have to do with you? Well, PWRDF is encouraging Anglicans across Canada to host an interfaith dinner, meal, or reception in your home communities, and to invite your Member of Parliament to attend that event. During the event, we ask that you talk with your MP about the need for our government to support the justice issues listed above, and also to live up to Canada’s commitments to the Millennium Development Goals. If you are looking for help in learning how to host such a dinner, there is a resource kit with guidelines and everything you need to know here. There will also be a petition to sign and send in to indicate your support. If you and your parish host a dinner, please email us and let us know! It will help us track these events across Canada, and allow us to know how many Anglicans are involved!
