the justfund!

justgeneration.ca's Youth Empowerment and Education Fund

$15,000 is available each year (April 1 to March 31) to encourage youth (individuals or groups) to attend local/national events with a justice-theme around Canada!!!

Purpose:
The purpose of the fund is to encourage youth (16-30) within the justgeneration.ca / PWRDF youth network - especially Anglican and other Christian youth - to live their baptismal commitments by becoming active in and knowledgeable of issues of development, global justice, refugees, peace and the environment in many global and local communities. justgeneration.ca wants to provide you with an opportunity to become a leading educator and activist in your community!

History:
The PWRDF Youth Council established this fund in May 2007 which is dependent on the yearly budget PWRDF. The fund was established in response to the many requests we receive for funding each year to assist justgeneration.ca network youth to attend events.

What Gets Funded (Criteria):
Funding is for travel and/or registration of individuals or groups for events such as pilgrimages, conferences, delegations, exchanges and social justice actions that educate and empower youth and deepen youth involvement in movements and initiatives for justice, peace and sustainable development.

  • First priority for funding goes to events which the justgeneration.ca / PWRDF Youth Council has supported or endorsed (in the past these have included Justice Camps, SOA pilgrimage, etc.) - as well as for other official PWRDF events (such as Diocesan Forum, Delegations, Refugee Network Meetings, etc).
  • Support for attendance at non-supported or non-endorsed events may be proposed by network members and may be considered by the justgeneration.ca Staff and a Youth Council representative, as long as the proposed event aligns with the general goals and purpose of PWRDF and/or ecumenical and social justice networks that PWRDF is a member of– and that there is a sufficient amount of justice and or sustainable development content within the event.
  • Events sponsored by national and global PWRDF/justgeneration.ca partners will be given strong consideration for funding.
  • Strong consideration will be given to events that are youth-focused – and especially events that are planned by and for youth.
  • Strong consideration will be given to events that create or deepen partnerships between communities, and where evidence is given that these partnerships are sustainable and intended to be long-term in nature.
  • Strong consideration will be given to events where participants show that they are minimizing the ecological impact of their travel.
  • Consideration will be given to groups (such as youth groups) who apply for funding. Up to $2500 may be given to a group as long as that group provides matching funds from their own fundraising, or from other sources. Groups are expected to provide strong leadership, sound budgeting, parish endorsement and a clear plan for the activities and follow up.
  • Strong consideration will be given to events that educate and empower a wider network of people than the participant alone.
  • Strong consideration will be given to events that show strong leadership & capacity building.
  • Strong consideration will be given to youth who demonstrate economic need.

Eligibility:

  • Youth must be members of the justgeneration.ca / PWRDF youth network. Stronger consideration will be given to Anglican or Anglican-affiliated youth in the network.
  • Youth must be between 16 and 30 years of age (unless an exception is made in consultation with the PWRDF Youth Council). Youth under 18 (as minors) may have special conditions placed on the funding.
  • In certain incidences, justgeneration.ca staff may seek confidential reference checks. These may include endorsement by a parish priest or parish council and/or appropriate diocesan authorities - especially in the case of contentious or higher-risk events.
  • PWRDF reserves the right to refuse or limit (or place additional disclaimers) on funding to youth less than 18 years of age - especially regarding events that have a higher degree of risk.

Expectations:

  • Recipients of funds (participants) are expected to either write a reflection on the event they participated in, or be interviewed and to have these reflections used by justgeneration.ca / PWRDF as needed.
  • Participants are expected to speak or present their experience to their local community and PWRDF networks (financial support can be accessed)
  • Participants may be asked to speak or present their experience (at PWRDF expense) to the PWRDF networks, beyond their immediate geographic local.
  • Participants are requested to consider fun, engaging and creative ways to report back to The Primate's World Relief and Development Fund and the network - and creative proposals will be taken into account in granting funding (write and record a song? make a documentary? a poetry book? Hold an event?).

Liability:
The PWRDF organization, their staff, youth council, affiliates and partners are not liable for situations that occur in travel to or during events that are funded through the justfund.

Though justgeneration.ca is committed to supporting safe and uplifting initiatives, we realize that many events do involve a greater degree of risk. Youth over 18 years of age are responsible for their own well being while on events supported by the justfund. Youth under 18 years of age may be asked to provide parental waiver forms and/or be supervised by qualified staff or volunteers. The parents or guardians and or youth group leaders are responsible for the well-being of minors and will be required to provide PWRDF with assurances of appropriate supervision. PWRDF is by no means responsible for the physical or emotional well being of anyone who we choose to fund, nor are we responsible for the content of any of the events that we choose to fund.

Process:

  • Funds may be granted on a first-come, first serve basis so that applicants are encouraged to plan ahead and submit early in the funding period.
  • Potential participants are asked to submit a 1-3 page proposal for funding to info@justgeneration.ca. Depending on the amount requested and the type of event a telephone interview and/or reference checks may be required.

In the proposal please include the following:

  • A description of the event or a link to the information
  • Why this event is of interest to you or your group?
  • What past experience or interest do you have that will enhance your participation in this particular event?
  • Do you have any local involvement in church or community groups?
  • What benefit will it be to you and/or the community you are a part of?
  • How will you share the experience gained with your community?
  • How will you share the experience gained with PWRDF?
  • How much are you able to contribute financially?
  • Contact information including full mailing address, email address, and appropriate phone numbers.
  • A group should include a summary of how this event fits into the larger plan of group activities.
  • A group also needs to show due diligence in leadership, budgeting and parish support. If you'd like more information, give us a call or email us at info@justgeneration.ca
